Well not so fast, proper prep work will ensure a quality job. Tips from professional painters.
What we all love about paint is how quickly it can transform and make an impact on our spaces. As DIY’ers the hardest part of the painting process is the prep work. Before you pick up that paintbrush and begin, think like a professional painter and do your prep work. Careful preparation will ensure an outcome you will enjoy and can live with for years to come.
o Remove pictures and switch plate covers from your walls. Remove small items that can easily be knocked over from shelves and tables. Large furniture needs to be moved away from the walls and covered with plastic or a large tarp.
o Use painter’s tape. Run the tape over any areas you might be unable to “cut-in” cleanly or where drips can occur.
o Spend time repairing surface imperfections and stains. Spackle and smooth all nail holes, do sheet rock repairs where necessary. For stains, use a primer that specifies “stain blocker”. Wash any heavily soiled walls with a no-rinse mild detergent.
Sometimes calling in a professional is the best way to handle existing wall issues like cracking/peeling paint or water damaged walls. Simply covering these problems with another coat of paint will not correct these issues. Professional painters are familiar with the many causes of paint failures and know how to correct these problems. The end result of beautifully painted walls and proper surface treatments and repairs will outweigh the additional expense of hiring a professional painting contractor.
